Google’s Recent Webmaster Guideline Changes: What You Need to Know

Les derniers changements dans Google Webmaster Tools, ce que vous avez besoin de savoir;

The brains at Google are always working to make the web a place where users produce content for each other, not just for web crawlers. They recently changed their Link Schemes section to include advertorials, large scale article and guest blog campaigns, and optimized anchor text in articles and press releases. This is hardly surprising, since the changes coincide with Google’s ongoing aim to discourage the manipulation of their search algorithms.
Large Scale Article and Blog Campaigns
What is considered a “large scale” blog or article campaign? As Matt Cutts said when he addressed this issue last year, the question is actually in what your intention is behind yourguest blogging. If you intend to build lots of back links with your guest blogging, then you probably intend to do a lot of guest blogging for that purpose. If your intent is to establish credibility or add value to another person’s blog, then you’re probably not aiming for volume.
Advertorials
Cutts also addressed advertorials in a video earlier this year. An advertorial, also known as native advertising, is a piece of editorial content that a company pays to have published. This content usually contains back links to the company’s website. In essence, this is paying for back links, a practice that search engines have never been fond of. Earlier in the year Google penalized UK flower company Interflora for the use of advertorials to artificially boost their search rankings. Advertorials can be misleading to the reader, who is reading the content with the idea that the site owner is promoting the company for reasons other than monetary. Cutts advises that webmasters “clearly and conspicuously” disclose when a piece of content is an advertorial by using the words “advertisement” or “sponsored” to describe it.

Optimized Anchor Text
Optimizing anchor text is when you use target keywords as anchor text for a link back to your website. Google uses the following example:
There are many wedding rings on the market. If you want to have a wedding, you will have to pick the best ring. You will also need to buy flowers and a wedding dress.
Using keyword optimized anchor text is still a common practice in the SEO world, but here’s the thing: When Google’s web crawlers see this link leading back to your site, they assume that someone aside from you is in effect recommending your website by associating it with the keyword and a backlink. Since that isn’t the case, Google considers this to be a manipulative tactic.
How To Handle These Links
It’s still okay to publish content online that contains links back to your website. Google recommends that you use the “rel=nofollow” attribute to prevent these links from passing PageRank. You can also redirect the link to an intermediate page that is blocked from search engines using a robots.txt file.
The Case for Organic SEO
These updates to the Link Scheme document are meant to encourage people to use links for the original reason they were intended: To get people to click on them. Once upon a time, in the early days of the web, a webmaster would create a website and submit the URL to a search engine for indexing. The search engine would dispatch a web crawler to the URL, which would crawl the website for relevant links and keywords. The crawler would then send this information back to the search engine, which would give the website a place in the search results based on how relevant it judge the website to be.
It wasn’t long before people began to see the advantage in having a website rank higher than the next guy’s for relevance. There were no measures in place at the time to prevent people from taking advantage of search engines, so it wasn’t long before webmasters and internet marketers began to freely exploit weaknesses in search algorithms for their own gain. If you remember the internet of just three or four years ago, you remember that spammy websites and irrelevant search results abounded. Developers began creating more sophisticated search algorithms to bring order to the chaos. Over time, they made updates to the algorithms to make them even more bullet proof (think Panda and Penguin). Years of experience and accumulated technical savvy have made Google a much smarter search engine than it once was.
What Does It Mean For You?
You don’t have to nofollow every link in your offpage content. If it’s a link that you’ve added with the intention of link building, then it’s best to drop that aspiration and nofollow it. If it’s a link that you’d include naturally whether the search engines would see it or not, then leave it as is. If you have links in past guest posts that you haven’t nofollowed, then it’s probably too late to change those. Just keep Google’s new link scheme policy in mind for future reference.
How To Use Time You Would’ve Spent Link-Building
Instead of focusing on building links, get on social media, into forums, and in blog comments to build awareness for your site. This doesn’t mean that you should start spamming people. Rather, demonstrate that you have something of value to offer. Find fresh and worthwhile ways to attract a readership, and keep offering content that’s worth reading. In other words, let others build back links for you. Natural shares and other social signals do more good for your website than links you’ve created yourself.
You can also use this time to further optimize your website. Add meta tags, update files names, transcribe video, and do all of the other SEO stuff you’ve been putting off.
While there’s nothing wrong with using online content as a promotional tool, you want to be promoting to humans, not web crawlers. After all, it’s humans who indicate to search engines which websites are most relevant. As it has been said many times before, building links purely for the sake of SEO could get your website penalized. Links were always meant for driving organic traffic, and if the reader likes what he sees, he will likely want to share it. According to Google, this is just the way things ought to be.

How to improve your site’s SEO: 4 experts share their priority checklist

Si les premiers points semblent aller de soi, les conseils qui suivent vous seront précieux, à partir du point 10 plus précisément.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is a pretty dry yet essential topic to most startups, so I’ve compiled some straightforward and easy to follow tips from various SEO experts.
Dewi Nawasari, Search Marketing Manager at Autotrader defines SEO as a process of optimising your website to attract relevant customers who are searching for your service using search engines like Google and Yahoo.
Although she has not run SEO for any startup just yet, these are the things she recommends you to do to get started:
1) Create good navigation links.
Think about making your customer’s journey within your website as easy and smooth as possible. The shorter the steps they need to make to find your contact details, to register, or to complete a sale, the higher success rate you would receive. Search engines crawl your website through your navigation links, so if your customers are happily browsing, good chance that search engine crawlers are too.
2) Make your page copy relevant and descriptive.
When you type in a search in Google for example, you would see results with big font size titles and a snippet of description below the title, which serves as your first layer of marketing. You should include a homepage title and your description should briefly describe the type of service you do.
3) Include core content within your site.
Answer questions like what do you offer? How much does your service cost? Are you reliable and trustworthy? Can you be easily reached?.
4) Get listed on local search engines and directories.
Start with the main players like Google Plus Local, Yahoo directory and Yelp, then down to the business and local government listings in your area. You increase the likelihood of your potential customers finding you when you make more listings.
5) Encourage as many reviews and testimonials as possible.
Reviews are allowed on your listings in local search engine and directories, but you should also enable them on your website to allow customers to use whichever medium they are comfortable with.
6) Have a presence in relevant social media sites.
They add to the number of places your customers can leave reviews on, and it will be exposed to hundreds of their friends. It’s a great place to gain business via referrals.
7) Offer freebies.
Know of a great on-topic event to be told? Top tips and how to? Money-off a second service/sale? Make sure you publish it on your website, mention it on your Facebook page, and release it on your local news site. Good on-topic content gives you better chance to be listed in search engine results for on-topic searches.
8) Create a mobile optimised website.
Mobile usage is growing exponentially so now is the time to get ahead in the game.
Always keep in mind that SEO is not just a process to make sure search engines are happy, it is a process to make sure you are delivering the best customer service to your customers.
Ned Poulter, SEO Manager at Miinto also gives his round of SEO tips.
9) Set up Google Analytics to understand who is using your site
While not necessarily SEO specific, first thing you should do is install Google Analytics and check that it’s installed on every page. The access to a vast array of user specific data is what separates digital from traditional marketing. Use this to your advantage!
10 ) Set up Google Webmaster Tools to understand how search engines are interacting with your site
Many are unaware of the great toolset that Google provides in the form of Google Webmaster Tools. Ensure that you verify your site with Webmaster Tools to allow the search engine itself to provide detailed information on how they see your site. Understand important issues like:
• Is Google crawling your site? If so, how many pages is it discovering?
• What internal links are being recognised?
• What external links are pointed at your site?
Use this to help recognise when search engines are struggling to reach your content.
11) Create an XML sitemap
One of the most simple actions a webmaster can take is to create an XML sitemap, this is best understood in layman’s terms as a ‘list of all of the URLs on your website’. Submitting this to Google Webmaster Tools ensures that you provide all pages that are active on your site, giving them a head start when trying to discover, and index, your content.
• Use a tool like this to create an XML sitemap
• Submit sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools
12) Domain name resolution
301 redirect the canonical (e.g. http://example.com/) to the non-canonicalised version (e.g. http://www.example.com/) of your site. Otherwise, you may cause confusion for search engines as they struggle to decipher whether http://www.example.com/ or http://example.com/ is the correct page. Your browser could also just not find the requested URL on the server which can lead to a multitude of issues. This will also cause a bad experience for users as if they cannot find your home page, they may leave never to return again.
With this in mind, you should implement 301 redirects from the canonical (http://example.com/) to the non-canonical (http://www.example.com/). If this is too technical, get in touch with Ned and he might be able to help.
Itching for more? Here’s a couple of pointers from Steve Morgan, Freelance SEO Consultant at Morgan Online Marketing:
13) Interlink between websites
If you run multiple startups and/or multiple sites, make sure that they’re all linking to each other, whether it’s from the blog roll, footer links or somewhere else (e.g. About pages). It’s usually a quick win, something you have 100% control over implementing yourself.
14) Make sure that you link from social profiles
If/when you create company profiles for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc., make sure that you include the link back to your site. You’d be amazed how many people either overlook this or simply forget to do it (e.g. if they’re in a hurry). While you may not get a lot of SEO value from the social profile links themselves, they may get picked up elsewhere (e.g. being on Twitter directories usually passes more SEO value than being on Twitter itself).
15) Network (offline)!
Go out and meet people – seriously! Go to local networking events and also see if there’s a startup community in your vicinity. Get to know people and suddenly opportunities such as guest blogging, article contribution and PR opportunities should increase dramatically, all of which should benefit your site’s SEO.
16) Sort out your Google Places listing
If a list of Google Places results show up for your keywords (e.g. a Map with corresponding results), make sure that you get a Google Places listing sorted pronto. It’s free and quick to set up. In particularly non-competitive spaces, simply creating a listing can be enough to rank without further optimisation required.
17) Be smart about choosing a domain
Startups are notorious for choosing bizarre and wacky names (as well as domain names), but be smart about your domain name choice. For example, if you’re a cake shop called Fantastic Monkey (that’s a freebie if anyone wants it!), fanastic-monkey-cakes.co.uk might benefit you more than fm-uk.co, not only for brand searches but for keyword searches as well, due to the inclusion of “cakes”. Of course, SEO isn’t the be-all-and-end-all of online marketing channels, but with something like a domain name, it makes sense to choose well right from the start.
Finally, David Sottimano, SEO Consultant for Distilled categorises his tips by level:
Absolute Beginner level SEO
Ensure that your site is accessible by search engines. Use meta data, or HTML text for technology that search engines have trouble indexing, like Javascript, videos, and images.
General rules of thumb for new sites is to have no more than 100 links per page, keep the architecture no more than 3 levels deep and link your important pages from the homepage using descriptive anchor text. Lastly, every page title should be unique, descriptive, less than 70 characters long and contain the target keyword (preferably near the beginning).
Intermediate
Assuming that your site is accessible, you’ll need to create some content and optimize to acquire search traffic. By using tools such as Google autocompleteUbersuggest, and your customer’s questions – you’ll come up with a list of keywords your audience will search for to find your website.
Once this list is complete, you’ll need to create exceptional pages targeting each broad topic. Example: Yahoo has a fantastic free online image optimization tool, but you would never be able to find it in search because of the keyword targeting .
Advanced
Links are still the most important external ranking factor in Google’s algorithm, and it pays off to adopt a culture where everyone is responsible for marketing. Ask for links from friends, customers, business partners and encourage employees to reference the company website wherever they can (social media profiles for example).
With regards to creating exceptional, naturally link worthy assets on your site, remember two principles: “you need at least two of the following: time, money and talent” and you can still produce great content with no budget. Stay away from quick win tactics including links from low quality syndication, article marketing, and buying links as these are not sustainable and targeted by Google’s Webspam team.
So there you have it, SEO tips to keep you busy for the next year or so!

Une Ptite vite - SEO Link Building 101

Despite the low sound quality and the fact that this video was released in 2008, the relevance of the basics of setting up a network of links of authority still relevant and good to understand.

Review: If you want an app to control your other apps, then try IFTTT

Being a good chef takes a lot of hands on experience, plenty of failed attempts, and some well-honed taste buds to decipher what flavors work well together. We have none of those skills. If only making a good meal was as easy as executing a recipe in IFTTT (If This, Then That), the mobile version of the web service that first appeared in 2010. The app makes all of your other apps work better by creating ways for them to work together.

IFTTTbIFTTT is all about creating what it calls “recipes.” These recipes are essentially commands that you create within the app that it then dictates to other apps and services to create a new function that otherwise wouldn’t happen. It’s kind of confusing when you’re trying to imagine it, but when you see it in practice it makes total sense. An example recipe would be something like “If tomorrow’s forecast calls for rain, send me a text message.” IFTTT then sends that command to the two apps that it runs through, Weather and your SMS service of choice, to provide you with a text update if there is rain incoming.

If you’re unsure of how to make the most out of IFTTT, don’t worry – you don’t have to sit and try to come up with recipes on your own to actually get use out of it. You can borrow recipes that others have created. You can sort through existing recipes by popularity and use to get ideas or try out commands that others have found helpful. You’d be surprised at some of the combinations that people have mixed and matched to come up with and just how useful they end up being (and why the app creators didn’t come up with the idea in the first place). You can even search for recipes by app to see what others have come up with before you head into the laboratory yourself.

You shouldn’t feel too intimidated to create your own recipes with ifttt, though. The most amazing part about the app is that it allows you to make events happen without any programming knowledge. All you have to do to make a recipe is pick a service that you’d like to get a new function out of, figure out how you’d like it to manifest, and hit the “Finish” button to put it into action. It’s extremely simple and essentially just has you pick options from a list of possible actions to come up with your creation. Those actions are so plentiful though that you’ll never have a shortage of ways to make apps interact and work together.

It is possible to make recipes that do not work. You can come up with a brilliant idea to make some feature that you believe should exist but you were never able to do only to have it shut down by the fact that it’s just not possible. IFTTT isn’t great about letting you know why something isn’t working or where the hang ups seem to be, but you’ll also know it’s not working as soon as you try it out so you aren’t totally left in the dark about it. Hang ups caused by the apps themselves are the only downside of IFTTT.

Whether you’re looking to get more use out of particular apps, create specific types of events that will make your life easier, or just take a look at what other tech-centric minds out there have come up with to improve app features, IFTTT is worth a download.

Warning: If you’re someone who is especially concerned with apps sharing information with one another, reconsider downloading this app. It’s going to ask you to log in to everything and give permission to use your information when needed. If that’s something you’re comfortable with, then get into IFTTT, play around, and see if you can’t turn your apps into services you never knew you couldn’t live without until you made it.

5 Easy to Use Tools to Effectively Find and Remove Stolen Content Seen on KissMetrics

If you have a blog, write articles for content websites, or manage an online magazine, chances are you’ve had, or will have, your content stolen at least once. The stolen content then is reposted on other blogs, article websites, and personal websites without proper attribution.
Sometimes articles are copied directly from your site to another person’s site. In other cases, your article is spun or slightly modified, but the final result clearly is based on your original work.
There also could be situations where your content is reposted with proper attribution, but without your permission. While instances of this nature are not always harmful to your site and/or reputation, if you want to keep your original content on your site only, then you should have the duplicate content removed.
The good news is that no matter how or why your content is used without your prior knowledge, there are measures you can take to have it removed from the offending website. And there even are ways to prevent your content from being stolen in the first place. Today, I’m going to tell you about 5 easy tools you can use for these tasks.

How to Find Out If Your Content Has Been Stolen

1. Google Alerts

There are a number of tools you can use to scour the internet and see if your content is being used without your permission. One of the best and simplest tools for this is Google Alerts.
You simply need to go to the Google Alerts website, put in a portion of your article, choose what types of websites should be searched, and then provide your email address so Google can contact you with the results. You can create as many alerts as you like and adjust the settings to be notified on a daily, weekly, or “as it happens” basis.

Google Alerts is a great tool to use to search for stolen content.

2. Copyscape

Copyscape is a good option for those who publish a lot of content. Premium results are not free, but they are well worth the money spent. All you have to do is type in your website URL. Then Copyscape will search the web and let you know which sites are reposting your content.
CopyScape
Copyscape is a helpful tool to use to see if your website content has been plagiarized.
Yet another good tool for catching content thieves is trackback notifications. These notifications are provided automatically by well-known website and blog platforms such as WordPress, Drupal, and Movable Type. They will notify you as soon as someone links to your post.
If a particular site is linking to your site on a regular basis, there is a chance the site is copying and reposting your material. In order to use trackback notifications, you simply need to look over the feedback provided by your site (which usually is sent to you via email), and then check any site that you deem suspicious.

How to Remove the Offending Content

Many bloggers and webmasters have a contact page or email address on their sites, so you can contact them and ask to have duplicate content removed. While many content thieves will ignore emails of this nature, others will take down your content as soon as you ask them to, especially if you mention that you will file a complaint against them if the article is not removed in a timely manner.

3. Who Is Hosting This

If your request falls on deaf ears, then contact the website hosting service that hosts the site. You can find the information you need by going to Who Is Hosting This and typing in the URL of the site that has stolen your content. Website hosting services usually are much more efficient when it comes to removing duplicate content than webmasters. Often, they will take down the entire site that has posted your content without permission.
who is hosting this
Who Is Hosting This does the hard work for you. One of the hardest parts of fighting plagiarism is determining the host of a website.
If your article has been republished on an article-sharing site such as Ezine, HubPages, or Suite101, then contact the site administration regarding the duplicate content. Provide the link to your original content, the date it was published, and a statement making it clear that you are in fact the author of the content in question. Article-submission sites are quick to act against content thieves. They may even close the guilty individual’s account.

4. Google Webmaster Tools – DMCA Complaint

You also can file a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaint against a site that has stolen your content. This can be done via Google Webmaster Tools. It is a bit complex and should be done only if someone else is getting high rankings for your content. However, it is effective in preventing content thieves from misusing your content both now and in the future.
If Google deems that another site actually has been stealing your content, then the site will be banned from Google’s search engines. If the content thief has been making money from your content using Google Adwords, then his or her Adwords account will be shut down and the guilty individual will be banned from opening another one.
DMCA complaint
If you find that your content has been stolen, you are able to report this issue directly to Google.
Webmasters tools
Google’s Webmaster Tools provides a great deal of information on a website. It creates detailed reports about a page’s visibility on Google.

How to Stop This from Happening Again

Unfortunately, there is no foolproof way to prevent your content from being stolen. However, there are some things you can do to protect your content and reduce the odds of it being copied and posted on another person’s website without your permission.
Create a clear copyright notice and a Terms of Use page. They will let people know that the content is yours and cannot be used without your explicit permission. You can let people know in the Terms of Use if they can use portions of your content with proper attribution.

5. Google Search Authorship

If you post material online on a regular basis, you should set up Google Search Authorship, as this will help you prove you are the original creator of the content. If content thieves steal content under your Google Authorship, Google will note that it is yours and ensure your domain gets ranked over the domain of the content thief. Google has a helpful guide that explains how to go about claiming your original content.
Google Authorship
Authorship is the method to exhibit authorship information in search results for the content you have created. It also is the way Google identifies the author so it knows the content belongs to the author.
KISSmetrics recently noted that it is very easy to add a customized script at the beginning or end of each of your articles. Adding a customized RSS script ensures that the link to your original article is reposted automatically when someone lifts your content and puts it up elsewhere. While a customized RSS link does not prevent content theft, it does ensure that you get proper attribution for your hard work.

In Summary

Content theft on the internet always will be a problem. Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to prevent, track, and deal with stolen content. The above-mentioned tools and tips can help you protect your content from being scraped or at least ensure that you get the credit you deserve for all of your hard work and careful research.

How To Choose Domain Names For SEO

Originally posted here:
Seobook.com
Domaining.
It has been a hot topic for a while now, yet many domineers aren't overly active in the SEO space. Yet.
Domaining is when you register a domain, or buy a domain on the seondary market, with the intention of deriving traffic, and turning that traffic into revenue. Traffic comes from type in traffic. i.e. people type a keyword into the address bar and add .com on the end. Domains can be valuable internet real estate, because, unlike a search engine, there is no middleman between you and the visitor. A lucrative pursuit, if you choose the right names.
Let's take a look at how domineering strategy can be applied to SEO.

Background

Aaron has a great interview with Frank Schilling. Frank is one of the biggest domaineers on the planet, and an articulate advocate of this strategy.
Add this lot to your feed reader:
If anyone has other suggestions for great domaining blogs, please add them to the comments.

How To Select A Domain Name

Google tends to give weight to keywords in the domain name. This increases the importance of selecting a good name.
When choosing a domain name for SEO purposes, there are three main factors to consider:
  • Brand
  • Rankability
  • Linkability

Brand

Should you use hyphenated, multi-term domain like search-engine-marketing-services.com?
I'd avoid such names like the plague.
Why?
They have no branding value. They have limited SEO value. Even if you do manage to get such a domain top ten, you're probably going to need to sell on the first visit, as few people are going to remember it once they leave. It is too generic, and it lacks credibility.
In a crowded market, brand offers a point of distinction.
It is easier to build links to branded domain names. People take these name more seriously that keyword-keyword-keyword-keyword.com, which looks spammy and isn't fooling anyone. Would you link to such a name? By doing so, it devalues your own content .
It can even difficult to get such domain names linked to when you pay for the privilege! Directory editors often reject these names on sight, because such names are often associated with low-quality content. Imagine how many free links you might be losing by choosing such a name.
Is there a downside to using branded names?
Yes.
Unless you have a huge marketing budget, no one is going to search for perseefgxcbtrfy.com, which is a new killer, brand I just made up ;)
Thankfully, there is a happy medium between brand and SEO strategy.

Rankability

SEOs release the value of keywords. When naming your site, and deciding on a domain name, try combining the lessons of SEO, branding and domaining.
Genric + term is a good approach to use. Take your chosen keyword, and simply add another word on the end. SeoBook, Travelocity, FlightsCity, CarHub, etc. These words have SEO value built into them, because people are forced to use your keywords in the link. Also, Google (currently) values a keyword within the domain name for ranking purposes. Finally, such a name retains an element of unique branding.
These types of domain names score high on the rank-ability and link-ability meter. They are generic enough to rank well for the keyword term, yet contain just enough branding difference to be memorable.

The SEO Advantage

There is another advantage for SEOs in the domain space.
Dot com's can sell for 5-20 times as much as a .org or .net. Keyword + .com can sell for millions of dollars, depending on the domain name.
Expensive, huh.
But...
By registering or buying the cheaper .net or .org equivilent, building out the site, and ranking well for the keyword + net, or +org, you increase the value of the domain name markedly. Sure, you're one step away from pure domaineering and you still have Google to contend with, but you'll be head and shoulders above those who are undervaluing these names.
A lot of domaineers aren't operating in this space.
Yet.

Other Tips And Ideas

Leave The Keyword Out Entirely

Used the related search function on Google ~ + keyword and see if any of the related keyword terms fit. This can be a good strategy to use if all the good generic keyword names are gone. It might get you close enough to the action, without the enormous price tag. Might be more memorable, too.

How To Test A Domain Name For Penalties Before Buying It

  • Verify the site is not blocking GoogleBot in their robots.txt file
  • Point a link at the domain from a trusted site and see if Google indexes it
  • Within a couple weeks (at most a month) Google should list the site when you search for it in Google using site:domainname.com

Le paysage des médias sociaux en 2013, par Brian Solis

Brian Solis set out to organize the emerging social media landscape as a way of helping enthusiasts significance of the new media world. He also hoped to provide strategists with a visual tool to consider unforeseen opportunities through a holistic lens. To do so, Brian partnered with Jesse Thomas of JESS3, at the time, a hot new visual design agency known for its unique infographic style. JESS3 brought a unique perspective to the social media ecosystem. Jesse’s creative design and Brian’s thoughtful approach would help make the Conversation Prism the standard illustration for all things social media. Brian Solis and JESS3 debuted the original Conversation Prism (v 1.0) in August 2008. It was initially released in a digital-only format designed specifically for blogs, websites and presentations.
Due to popular demand, The Conversation Prism was also designed as a printed poster. In March 2009, the poster was distributed by the thousands at SXSW Interactive in Austin. Since then, the image and the poster have been updated to cover significant changes in the landscape. As of 2013, there have been four renditions with version 4.0 marketing the most significant change since 2009.

The Prism was originally inspired by the Social Media Starfish, an early graphic developed by Darren Barefoot and Robert Scoble in 2007 that depicted some of the hottest Web 2.0 and social media companies at the time.

Why is it called a Prism and not a Color Wheel? To see it as simply a color wheel takes away from its design and purpose. The “prism” is defined figuratively and literally…

Using the traditional definition, a prism separates white light into a spectrum of colors. The “white light” in this case, is the focused stream of conversations that are often grouped, but not separated by voice, context, source, or outcome. We take this beam of dialog and blast it into a spectrum of discernible light, let’s call it enlightenment, to see, hear, learn and adapt. We quite literally bring conversations to light. Used figuratively, it references the clarification or distortion afforded by a particular viewpoint…for example, “We view conversations across the networks through the prism of our social dashboard.”
Each shade of color represents an entirely unique reflection of light, meaning separating context and intention by network.
Originally, we refracted the light of conversations vertically, like so many traditional prism images you see. But, as the social web grew, we shaped the refracted light into a circle to help everyday people understand that the days of one audience, one voice, one story were over. We now had to envision, organize, and understand that conversations take place in communities that we don’t yet realize…obviously far beyond Facebook and Twitter.

© Capture
